Cajual Records

Only 4 U Collects 20 Years Of Essential Cajual Records Releases

If there’s one Chicago label that in the 90’s took up the mantle from DJ International and Trax and ran with it way beyond everyone else in town then without a doubt its Cajual records as Bill Brewster explains in his great sleeve notes for the album . ” Hip hop, which had laid waste to dance radio in many cities across the USA, had initially been repelled by the strength of house music in Chicago. But, in the early 1990s, the citadel began to crumble as station after station succumbed. And while Cajual didn’t – couldn’t – prevent Chi-town from falling under the spell of its glitzier rival from the Bronx, it helped re-establish Chicago as the world’s pre-eminent city for house music” .

However initially Curtis Jones the man behind Cajual records AND Cajmere / Green Velvet himself was not on a bold mission to continue the legacy of the previous generation but was just a House kid starving in a tough city to survive in when your broke and it was his lyric writing for Lidell Townsell ‘Get wit u ‘ that put him on track . Now he had money and a handful of his own hits and put together a team working at Cajual and what a team as he told Bill ” “Derrick Carter was doing the promotions. You know, he’s a people person. And we had Spencer Kincy who was doing the distribution. It was… special. We had fun. We worked hard. Derrick and Spencer, they’re characters but they got the work done.”
Somehow the idea of Derrick , Spencer aka Gemini ( a truly amazing DJ and producer who is sadly lost to the scene ) and Curtis all working together as young lads conjures up the idea of a situation comedy show House style – Fresh prince meets Rising damp ( maybe its something i could pitch to C4 ).

This double CD links the heritage of 80’s Chicago but also takes the music forward in a way no other Chicago label did ( Yeah Dance Mania had great music as well but not on the scale as Cajual ) and basically every track on the CD could be played at any decent House club or party by DJ’s of any age . Dajae’s ‘U got me up ‘ remains a seminal slice of 90’s House music that in its Drama filled Danny Tenaglia mix demands a revival . Glen Underground’s ‘ Dreams ‘ is Deep House done properly with Soul and Cajmere’s collaboration with Walter Philips is a Faith party anthem that perfectly suits todays sweaty basements and East london warehouse scene

Only 4 U will be released October 30th on 2CD, 2LP, and digital download, with liner notes by Bill Brewster and rare photos from the Cajual archive.
